Abstract. The article is consider with theoretical and empirical approaches to the problem of psychological and pedagogical characteristic diagnostic. The general diagnostic dimensions are describe. Some original methods are tasted. The methods were created on the basis of described theoretical approaches and practical experience which was accumulated during time period 1995-2010. Some fragments of empirical study are presents. There is comparative analysis of psychological characteristics of students which are only, older and younger child in the family. Discovered differences are describe. Analysis performed in accordance following points:

  1. Attitudes to university choice and opportunity to educate in it.
  2. The main sense of high education and general motives of education.
  3. Relation to education as a whole.
  4. Estimation the validity of received results.
  5. The student profession orients and priorities.
